About Amelia

I grew up near Loch Ness and completed my undergraduate LLB degree and Diploma in Legal Practice at the University of Aberdeen. I have recently joined Balfour+Manson as a trainee (August 2016).

During my undergraduate degree I was a dedicated member of The Aberdeen Law Project and I became Head of the Charity and Commerce Sector in my final year. This involved providing help to individuals in charity or commerce organisations that cannot afford legal advice. My time at The Aberdeen Law Project was useful as a means for preparing for my traineeship because I was conducting research projects, I had my own responsibilities and I had clients relying on the team and myself. I was awarded the Pinsent Masons Pro Bono Award in 2015, for my commitment to the Project.

Away from the office I enjoy running, cooking and sailing. I have recently completed the RYA Competent Crew sailing course.

Specialist area

I have joined the firm’s highly regarded Litigation department for my final seat. The majority of my time is spent assisting with medical negligence actions in the Court of Session but I also assist the team with pursuing personal injury actions.

For my third seat, I joined the Family Law Team. I assisted Shona Smith (Partner and Head of Department) and Linda Walker (Associate) with a variety of family actions in both the Court of Session and Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

In February 2017, I joined Iain Nicol’s litigation team. My role was to assist him with his wide-ranging personal injury and medical negligence litigation caseload. Working in Iain’s team has been hugely beneficial for my training because I was thoroughly involved with many of his files and Iain put in a lot of effort to ensure that I had plenty of Personal Injury litigation training.

I began my training at Balfour+Manson in the Residential Property department. I enjoyed being part of the team and I was given high quality training on how to conduct sale/purchase transactions, re-mortgages, discharges of mortgages and leasing.
