Rise in Employment Tribunal claims during COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on Employment claims, with the number of single claims received by the Employment Tribunal over the past year rising by 17% compared to the previous 12 months, up from 36,336 to 42,392 (Ministry of Justice Tribunal Statistics Quarterly figures up to September 2020).

Although fewer employees have been attending their working premises due to the increase in home-working and the furlough scheme, it is evident that the pandemic has had a notable effect on unemployment, changes to working practices, and employer-employee relations.

We will have to wait for updated figures from the Ministry of Justice for the remainder of 2020 to assess the continuing impact that COVID-19 is having on Employment Tribunal claims, however the trend would suggest that the number of claims will remain high as the pandemic continues.
