I qualified as a solicitor in 2003 and joined Balfour+Manson in 2018, being made up to partner on 1st January 2021.

I studied at the University of Edinburgh and, but for a year’s detour to Australia (working for a two large legal firms and a Royal Commission), have worked in Edinburgh ever since. Initially specialising in residential property, I made the move over to private client in 2004. Immediately prior to joining Balfour+Manson I was the head of the private client team at a small family-run law firm.

As a Private Client solicitor I deal with a variety of issues all of which can, and in some cases certainly will, affect private individuals. I advise clients in relation to succession planning, including Inheritance Tax issues and the drafting of Wills; the granting and operation of Powers of Attorney; the administration of executry estates; and the creation and running of trusts.

The best thing about my job is knowing that I have helped people to better deal with some of life’s expected and/or unexpected trials and tribulations.

Having recently earned a first class honours degree in Mathematics from the Open University, I relish the numbers and formulae involved in preparing executry accounts and undertaking tax calculations.

When I am not at work you will find me trying (but usually failing!) to keep myself fit by running and playing the occasional game of badminton. I also sing in a local choir.

Excellent service received. Straight forward, understandable communications and advice received. Everything was well explained and actions to be taken clearly given.

I needed to make a will, including provision for one of my children, who is an adult with incapacity. This isn’t completely straightforward, and Graeme Thomson guided me patiently through it, answering all my questions and keeping on the case even when I was very slow with my responses. Would recommend!
