International Women’s Day 2021

This year’s theme, #ChoosetoChallenge is all about calling out gender bias and moving towards gender equality. It’s about everyone working together to create an inclusive world.

Click here to hear from some of our staff about what International Women’s Day means to Balfour+Manson…

Here at Balfour+Manson we are proud of our history, legacy and how our staff continue to challenge gender stereotypes.

Ethel Houston was the first female partner of any law firm in Scotland. She was assumed partner at Balfour and Manson back in 1949, just one of four partners at a time when women were generally not welcome on the Scottish legal scene.

Ethel was described as “non-conformist, feisty and a fiercely independent thinker”. Basically the embodiment of this year’s theme!

Since then we have continued to champion gender equality and inclusivity. Elaine Motion has led the firm as Chair since 2014 and we have a completely equal male to female partner ratio.

As a firm founded in 1888, people might think of us as rather traditional; the truth is very different. Times are changing and Balfour+Manson is delighted to be well ahead of the curve.

We have been pleased to see things moving in the right direction, particularly in the legal industry, but there is still lots more to do and everyone can play a role in forging gender parity.

That’s why our staff are raising their hands, choosing to challenge and calling out inequality, just like Ethel Houston did back in 1949.
