Paralegal Lorna wins top honour

Lorna McDowall of Balfour+Manson has been named as Paralegal of the Year in the Scottish Legal Awards 2022.

The Executry Paralegal in the Private Client team was awarded the honour in front of 500 people at an awards ceremony in Glasgow.

Lorna said: “I really appreciate being recognised for this award. I make it my aim to work hard each day and try to provide a professional and caring service for all my clients. It was a real honour to share a stage with such accomplished winners. It was a terrific night and I definitely relaxed after I had been on stage to collect my award!”

Shona Brown, Head of the Private Client team at Balfour+Manson, said: “Lorna is an excellent paralegal and well-deserving of this award.

“The Scottish Legal Awards are the longest-established and most prestigious awards of their kind and it means a lot to everyone in the team, and the wider firm, that Lorna has been rewarded for her skill, compassion and dedication.”

Lorna has more than 30 years’ experience in private client work, but now specialises in executries, administering estates from start to finish for bereaved families.

The private client team experienced one of its busiest-ever periods over the pandemic and Lorna managed a varied workload of executries during this time – many of them complex, international and high net worth at a time HMRC and the courts were struggling to cope.

Shona Brown added: “Lorna’s greatest achievement, and biggest strength, throughout the pandemic was her commitment to client care. She consistently met client expectations, despite very challenging circumstances.

She was able to adapt to all the changes and demands which intermediaries and financial institutions required of us, with minimal fuss, prioritising clients at all times.

“Lorna remained calm, consistent and diligent throughout a fraught period. When the pandemic required her to do things outside her job description, she did so without hesitation.”
Lorna joined Balfour+Manson from Urquharts in 2018. Outside work, she plays softball and is also a keen curler.

“She is a great example of a team player, probably helped by her background in competitive sport,” said Shona Brown. “And she is always willing to transfer knowledge to others in a clear manner. She always gives her time willingly to colleagues, which is amazing when she is so busy herself.”

Balfour+Manson was also a finalist in the Litigation Team of the Year at the awards.
