Encephalitis

Whether it’s been a failure to diagnose the condition, carry out the appropriate tests or provide the appropriate treatment. If you think you have an encephalitis related claim our experienced team can help you.

What is encephalitis?

Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain caused by an infection or an inappropriate response from the immune system. There are around 6,000 cases in the UK each year and while it is quite rare it can affect anyone of any age.

If not treated quickly then its effects can be devastating. Early recognition and prompt treatment is the key to a more positive outcome avoiding serious brain injury.

The most common cause of Infectious Encephalitis in the UK is the herpes simplex virus (the cold sore virus). Autoimmune Encephalitis is used to describe the illness when the body’s own immune system triggers the illness by attacking the brain in error. The majority of autoimmune types are associated with finding specific antibodies in the blood.

Diagnosing encephalitis

Encephalitis is not easy to diagnose and on rare occasions it is possible that the standard of treatment received by the patient may fall short.

Most encephalitis medical negligence claims arise due to a failure to diagnose the symptoms, undertake appropriate investigations or administer the appropriate treatment in a timely manner.
